Course description

An advanced analysis of the theoretical perspectives of social, cultural, political and psychological issues in relation to literacies education. Aspects of theories and practices in literacies including raising the achievement of Māori and Pasifika students and students from diverse language backgrounds, and the influence of diversity and technology on literacy, will be analysed and evaluated.

Course overview

This course offers you the chance to develop your thinking around contemporary literacy education, exploring the social, cultural, political and psychological influences that have shaped the field.

Through weekly class lectures participants will delve into issues such as how modern technology is shaping literacy practice and the goal of raising Maori and Pacific Island student achievement.

Throughout this course you will develop skills and knowledge to locate, summarise and critique research studies which will inform your work, as well as how to conduct research of your own.

Learning outcomes

At completion of this course, students will be able to: Articulate a critically informed position on the effects of social, cultural, political and psychological influences on literacy development in education. Investigate an aspect of literacy education that informs theory and professional literacy practice.
