Course description

A critical examination of current issues relating to Mathematics and Statistics learning and teaching in New Zealand educational contexts.

Course overview

Are you looking to complete independent research in mathematics or get an overview of how research can inform practice in the field of mathematics education? EDPROFST 787 provides a foundation for understanding how the mathematics education issues that come up in the media and professional situations are related (or not) to research evidence. You will learn how to critique research, understand findings and work out what research can contribute to practice, untangling the evidence around 'back to basics' and 'problem solving' oriented curricula. By raising your understanding of the underpinnings of innovations in teaching you will be better able to make sound decisions about your own practice.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the course, it is intended that students will be able to: Critique research literature and policy in mathematics education using knowledge of common methodologies, frameworks and knowledge traditions in mathematics education. Analyse and synthesise research findings to understand problems of practice in mathematics education. Articulate reasoned explanations and opinions on current issues in mathematics education.
