This half-day workshop will provide teachers with culturally responsive, effective, fun and practical ideas to generate language and build vocabulary for children who come from backgrounds where languages other than English are spoken.
Through the use of a variety of everyday resources such as magazines, newspaper articles, mailers, food experiences, kiwiana activities, versatile templates, oral and listening tasks and games, teachers will be able to provide students with a variety of opportunities to learn English in an inclusive classroom environment.

Activities will acknowledge students' own cultural identity and foster development of both the social and academic skills of communication within a New Zealand context. Participants will explore some of the cultural components in text that hinder/facilitate meaning and look at the complexities of English language and vocabulary development.
