Description
This workshop takes place over two synchronous 90-minute workshops delivered via Zoom. A national focus on literacy is a timely opportunity to focus on the teaching of writing using mentor texts. Selecting a suitable mentor text can be a daunting task; deciding on a suitable one, knowing what to look for, and how it can be used with students will be addressed in these sessions.
The first synchronous online 90-minute workshop will model what to look for in a quality text and how it can be used. You will be shown how to analyse a text, and to use an excerpt from the text in your teaching to make a difference to student writing. Together, some beautiful picture books that are appropriate to read with students in Year 1 through to Year 8 will be explored.
The session will involve a demonstration of how to encourage active participation by students in identifying some of the details narrative writers use in these picture books, then using these in our own writing.
The second synchronous online 90-minute workshop will provide opportunity for participants to share some of the mentor texts identified and strategies used with students, and the impact this has had on student writing. As a group, we will be able to collate a list of texts that have been trialled by you, in Aotearoa New Zealand classes.
